Samba for VAS

Samba is a Unix implementation of the Microsoft Windows network filesystem protocol (CIFS or SMB). With Samba you can access Unix filesystems from Windows, and vice versa.

Our Samba solution consists of two packages:

quest-samba
a standalone package containing the Samba server and client tools. This independent, GPL package has a default configuration that interoperates with Vintela Authentication Services (VAS) through Kerberos configuration, keytab and LDAP interfaces.
quest-vasidmap
a helper package that provides Samba servers with accurate identity information for unix-enabled Active Directory users. We recommended it be used in all installations, but it is required for servers using VAS's UPM feature (Unix personality management).

These packages provide VAS customers with single-sign-on, authenticated CIFS service for Unix clients and servers in an Active Directory environment. Our enhancements include:

Please see the installation guide for full instructions and troubleshooting.

Quick Post-install configuration

After installing the quest-samba and quest-vasidmap packages you will need to do the following steps

  1. if not already done, join the machine to Active Directory using vastool,
  2. run the vas-samba-config script:
    # /opt/quest/bin/vas-samba-config
  3. edit the file /etc/opt/quest/samba/smb.conf to add shares

Please see the installation guide for detailed instructions and troubleshooting.

The packages have been tested on at least the following platforms:

Sources

Our source packages are normally structured to contain the original upstream source distribution and a patch file. Source distributions were obtained from Samba, OpenLDAP, and Heimdal distribution sites. We mirror the source archives.

Combined and derived sources can be accessed directly via our online repository using subversion, or browsed.

Compiling the vasidmap package requires the VAS SDK to be installed. This can be found in the SDK directory of the VAS CD.
